On Thursday, 16 March 2017, Westlawn’s very own Sarah Dougherty sacrificed her curls for a Number 1 buzz cut when she took part in this year’s World’s Greatest Shave for the Leakaemia Foundation. Teaming up with friends from Caringa’s My Life program, Sarah shaved it all off on stage in front of a live audience at the Grafton Community Centre.

Working very hard in the lead up to the big day, Sarah’s fundraising efforts impressed everyone here at Westlawn in Grafton. And while we all expected her to raise a lot of money, we were still shocked at Sarah’s final total of a whopping $4,210.

Sarah told the Daily Examiner that: “It’s a very good cause for cancer and research into developing why you get cancer and all of that”.

“I put tins out in all the work places and went around town and promoted it on my Facebook page.”

My Life Program manager Dirdre Jones said it was wonderful how involved the community had been in the fundraiser.

“Caringa decided to hold this just to try and include the whole community,” she told the Daily Examiner.

“The amount of money raised has just been amazing and I think it’s actually been a lot bigger than we expected.”

All of us at Westlawn are very proud of Sarah and her friends from the My Life program on their awesome fundraising effort!

About the World’s Greatest Shave

This iconic event is one of Australia’s biggest fundraisers. Each March, extraordinary Aussies like Sarah help beat blood cancer by getting sponsored to shave their hair! Although research is improving survival, sadly an Australian loses their life to blood cancer every two hours. The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national charity dedicated to helping more Australians survive their blood cancer and live a better quality of life.
